When Will People Actually Live on Mars?
In 2016 the public target for a crewed Mars landing was 2024. It is now 2026 and no crew has left low Earth orbit for anywhere except the Moon programme. This is not a scandal, it is just what hard engineering looks like from the outside.
The window problem
Earth and Mars line up for an efficient transfer roughly every twenty six months. Miss a window and you wait more than two years. That single fact shapes every schedule, because a slip of three months often becomes a slip of two and a half years.
The transit itself runs six to nine months each way with current propulsion. Then you wait on the surface for the return window, which pushes a round trip to somewhere near two and a half years total.
What has to exist first
Reliable heavy lift with orbital refuelling. Entry, descent, and landing for payloads an order of magnitude heavier than anything landed so far. Radiation shielding good enough for a multi year exposure. And in situ propellant production, because carrying return fuel from Earth is close to impossible at scale.
Uncrewed cargo missions land first, ideally two windows before any crew. Nobody sends people to a site that has not already proven it can make oxygen and methane.

Why any of this touches a certificate
